Self-esteem
Self esteem basically means that we should like ourselves, feel positive and respect your own worth. Feeling positive about yourself can determine how you perform. When we respect ourselves and feel really good in ourselves, we will do better at school, enjoy life, make new friends quickly, and we are more consciously aware and in control of our behavior.
People’s self-esteem either high or low is shaped by their life experiences. I believe a person’s self-esteem begins to take shape at an early age, with their parents being a major influence. Kind positive, knowledgeable and caring parents help children create a positive image. Parents who do not feel good about themselves or others, sometimes take it out on their children by belittling them or discouraging them.
This leads the child down a path of self-doubt and eventually given the right circumstances a lower self-esteem. Low self esteem is caused by factors depending on the background and status of the person, his surroundings, age, association with the outside world, etc.
Factors that cause low self esteem:
•Physical Appearance: When people most of them teenagers, don’t like their physical appearance or they are not comfortable with it. •Negative Experience: Some low self esteem issues are caused due to negative experience. Children tend to take the negativity around them. • Excessive Criticism: When a child is constantly reminded that he is not good enough at doing things, it results in depression and the child loses his self confidence. Such events create a feeling for be pessimistic.
Characteristics of having low self esteem:
1. Social withdrawal.
2. Eating disorders.
3. Inability to accept compliments.
4. Lack of social skills and self confidence.
5. Treating yourself badly but NOT other people.
6. Exaggerated concern over what you imagine other people think.
If you know someone with this kind of problem, you should try to help him/her, because this person might feel lonely and depressed. And if it is too serious, you must find a professional for help.
